Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has taken to Instagram to send a message of support to Reece James after injury ruled him out of the World Cup. England are set to announce their squad today, with Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling certain to be amongst those chosen by Gareth Southgate. Wing-back Ben Chilwell has had his tournament hopes ruined already by injury.
James had been hopeful that he was on for a sensational return from a knee injury to feature in the latter stages for England this winter in Qatar. His sensational season had left him the nailed on favourite to start on the right of England’s defence for the tournament.
However, news emerged that Gareth Southgate personally got in touch with him to inform him that we wasn’t willing to risk his fitness by taking him to Qatar. Drogba messages James This saw a number of his Chelsea teammates get in touch to offer their support, with Gary Neville messaging with his own experience at missing a major tournament through injury. Now, he will surely get inspiration after a club legend in Drogba commented a similar message on his Instagram. He said:
“Everything happen for a reason, keep the same spirit and you will be rewarded. Much love.”
While supporters will no doubt be gutted for the 22- year-old on a personal level, there will be a selfish part of Blues fans that will be thankful his fitness won’t be risked. Graham Potter has struggled massively to find a suitable replacement for James to help his side compete at the top level.
The likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus- Cheek have failed to have the same impact, whilst Raheem Sterling has seen his performances drop off since being needed to fill in there too. James is now targeting a return to football in a friendly during Chelsea’s training camp in Abu Dhabi.
