Chelsea’s summer long fling with Frenkie de Jong has continued as the player and his agent give Thomas Tuchel plenty to think about heading into the final two-and-a-half weeks of the transfer window.
The Blues have remained interested in the Dutch international throughout a turbulent window for the player in which he initially looked set to join Manchester United before the full-scale of Barcelona’s financial issues were disclosed, with threats of legal action being taken.
This hasn’t perturbed Chelsea and they are still waiting to find out what the resolution between Barcelona and De Jong will be , knowing that a bid could be made to bring the player to London. De Jong is currently trying to be persuaded to take a pay cut of up to 50% by the Spanish club, according to reports, and is also waiting on the outcome of what will happen with the wages he agreed to defer during the pandemic, which total around £17million currently.
Tuchel’s midfield is already in a precarious position, with the futures of both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho both looking connected to the outcome of the De Jong saga, and with Mateo Kovacic out injured for the London derby against Spurs, it raises questions as to how stable the club’s midfield department is.
And now, despite the belief that De Jong would still prefer to stay in Spain if possible, the Barcelona man and his agent have made another hint for Chelsea, indicating his transfer stance. On Instagram, De Jong posted an image of himself training, including the strong arm emoji – so far so good, nothing too abnormal. His agent has then raised speculation that this could be a cryptic message, replying with a flame emoji and a red love heart.
Now, although this could be a harmless bit of communication between the two, some have taken it to read that De Jong is truly happy at Barcelona despite the turmoil over his contract, and the likelihood is he wants to return to the pitch sooner rather than later to prove his dedication to Xavi’s side.
